Walker estimated that it could take 400 to 14 million years to contact ET with available technology. This is a longer way than researchers listening for alien radio signals and roaming the sky with telescopes and satellites (SN: 11/21/20, p. 18).
Despite the silence, the scholars sent their messages in a vacuum. In 1974, Earth sent a binary code wire from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Years later, probably the most famous message — the Golden Record — made its way to NASA’s space shuttle.SN: 8/20/77, p. 124).
