Maryland coach Mike Locksley became the latest recipient of a mayo bath after the Terrapins beat NC State 16-12 at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
The mayonnaise brand took over as the title sponsor of the former Belk Bowl after the 2019 season and fulfilled the threat of a mayonnaise bath after last year’s game when the Carolina coach South, Shane Beamer, had a jar of mayonnaise thrown on his head.
Locksley must have watched what happened to Beamer a year ago and prepared. He wore an oversized hat for the majority of the mayo dump, although he did get some on his head at the end after removing the mayo-covered hat.
The Maryland players were very excited about Locksley having mayonnaise thrown on his head. They were chanting “Where’s that mayo?” during the trophy presentation after the match. After Maryland got the trophy, Locksley walked over to a chair to get sprayed.
The Terrapins held NC State to 296 yards on offense and just five third conversions on 18 attempts. Each team turned the ball over twice, and the only touchdown of the game came in the second quarter when Octavian Smith Jr. scored on a 19-yard pass from Taulia Tagovailoa.
Maryland’s win means the Terrapins and Wolfpack end the season at 8-5.
