CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians have returned to playing their unique brand of baseball in Game 2 of the American League Division Series. They made contact. I had a few late clutch shots. Have shoved each other in big games. And they practically turned off the lights.
That added up to a 4-2 extra-inning victory over the Yankees to tie the series 1-1 as it returns to Cleveland for Game 3 tonight. Triston McKenzie gets the start for the Guardians a week after his strong start in the decisive Wild Card Series win over the Rays. Luis Severino goes for the Yankees.
Check back here all night for the latest updates on the game.
The Guardians win in walk-off mode 6-5
Bottom of the ninth: Oscar Gonzalez has done it again. With the bases loaded, Gonzalez hit a single down the middle to score a deuce and give the Guardians a 6-5 win.
Threatening keepers down the ninth
9th bottom: Two bloop bachelors have the Guardians in business. Myles Straw and Steven Kwan are the runners in the corners without anyone. Amed Rosario and Jose Ramirez are expected next.
Amed Rosario hit a single to the left side of the infield. It’s 5-4. The keepers have two and none for Ramirez.
Guardians trail 5-3 heading into round nine
8th down: The Guardians are down to their last three outs. Myles Straw, then the top of the range are expected.
Harrison Bader hits No. 3 home run for Yankees
Top 7th: The Yankees paced baseball with 254 home runs during the regular season. And they have three tonight.
Harrison Bader just hit the arguably third of the night, this one a solo shot to the bleachers in left field from Sam Hentges. It’s 5-3 Yankees.
Will Brennan halves Yankees lead with RBI single
6th down: The Guardians have closed in. Will Brennan, hitter for Austin Hedges with runners in the corners and two outs, hit an RBI single to right field from Yankees reliever Lou Trivino that cut the Yankees lead to 4-3.
Myles Straw fielded a ball down the middle, but it was caught by second baseman Gleyber Torres to end the inning with the Guardians still trailing 4-3.
Top 6th: Triston McKenzie’s day is over. His last line: four runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Oswaldo Cabrera homer gives Yankees 4-2 lead in fifth
Top fifth: Another fastball, another Yankees home run. Oswaldo Cabrera threw a fastball into the area and hit a home run without a doubt to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead. It also included a pretty impressive bat flip.
Sam Hentges is now in for Cleveland. Since the Guardians tagged Luis Severino for a run in each of the first two innings, he’s calmed down.
Aaron Judge ties it with a monster home run
First third: Aaron Judge woke up. After striking out four in Game 2 and in his first at bat tonight, Judge just hit an absolute missile from a home run to center field to tie it 2-2. It was measured at 449 feet.
Guardians take 2-0 lead on Steven Kwan RBI single
2nd bottom: The Guardians jump on Luis Severino. Gabriel Arias, in his first postseason batting career, doubled to left field and then scored on Steven Kwan’s RBI single to right field. Severino is about to throw his 50th pitch, and there is only one out in the second inning. The Guardians lead 2-0.
Josh Naylor gives Guardians 1-0 lead over Yankees in first inning
Bottom 1st: The Guardians struck first. Steven Kwan opened the inning with a brace down the right field line. Jose Ramirez followed with a single to right field, and Josh Naylor snatched a ball to the left side that shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa couldn’t handle to score Kwan and give Cleveland a 1-0 lead. 0.
