“Bald Volk” really happens for everyone.
Alexander Volkanovski is apparently lined up to challenge for lightweight gold in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for his next outing. From there, “The Great” is intent on winning, making him a two-division titleholder as he remains the kingpin of the featherweight division.
At 145 pounds, the mix of top contenders is muddled, which has been a big factor for Volkanovksi keen to pursue his big goal right now. No matter how things go, the champion expects disgruntled customers, but that won’t stop him from doing what he wants.
“There are a few that are right there, huh?” Volkanovski declared the top Featherweight contenders today (Thursday, November 10, 2022) during a special UFC 281 media day (h/t MMA Fighting). “I think someone is going to be a little disappointed. There is this top 3, right? Arnold Allen, Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett. Any of these guys who miss something happening there are going to be pretty disappointed. We just have to see what happens.
“I’ve made it clear that I want to be active and things like that and people keep going, ‘Ah, can you do two splits?'” he continued. “Well, I know for a fact that only one division can’t keep me busy enough. So why don’t we focus on that? Let’s be real. I’m ready to make both belts at the same time and I think I can do it because I want to fight every three months. Easy. That’s what I want to do. I don’t want to wait for that champion champ, I want to do it now. I’m in the best shape of my life, I’m at my peak right now. I want to enjoy it. and fuck people, so let’s go.
Volkanovski is expected to challenge new lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev in a big home match in February 2023 when the UFC returns to Perth, Australia. UFC 284 has had some great matchups before, but none would be bigger than the clash of champions.
