Are Qatar’s World Cup stadiums the future of sport in a warming world?

adminDecember 13, 2022

Of course, says Ghani.

In 2010, Qatar won the right to host that year’s tournament, for reasons more related to corruption than thermal dynamics.

In 2015, recognizing that scorching temperatures inside and outside stadiums could be both miserable and dangerous, FIFA moved the competition from its traditional summer dates to late autumn. The change may have made Ghani’s mission easier, with daytime temperatures in the 80s and 90s instead of 110s or higher, but he insisted it didn’t matter.

These eight stadiums of different sizes and designs were not reserved for the World Cup. One will be dismantled, but seven will be used, all year round: for major events, for club teams, for university athletics, perhaps even as part of an Olympic bid. (Such promises for everyday uses may not be fulfilled, as evidenced by ghost sites from past Games.)

In Qatar, the heat for nine months of the year is almost unbearable, Ghani said. And it’s not going to get better.

A short guide to the 2022 World Cup

Map 1 of 9

What is the World Cup? The quadrennial event pits the best national football teams against each other for the title of world champion. Here is an introduction to the 2022 men’s tournament:

Where is he standing? This year’s host is Qatar, which in 2010 beat the United States and Japan to win the right to host the tournament. Whether this is honest competition remains in dispute.

When is it? The tournament opened on November 20, when Qatar took on Ecuador. Over the next two weeks, four games will be played most days. The tournament ends with the final on December 18.

Is a Winter World Cup normal? No. The World Cup usually takes place in July. But in 2015, FIFA concluded that the summer temperatures in Qatar could have unpleasant consequences and agreed to move the tournament to the relatively bearable months of November and December.

How many teams are competing? Thirty two. Qatar automatically qualified as hosts, and after years of matches, the other 31 teams were granted the right to play. Meet the teams here.

How does the tournament work? The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four. During the opening phase, each team plays once against all the other teams in its group. The top two from each group qualify for the round of 16. After that, the World Cup is a knockout tournament.

How can I watch the World Cup in the United States? The tournament will be broadcast on Fox and FS1 in English, and on Telemundo in Spanish. You can stream it live on Peacock or streaming services that carry Fox and FS1. Here’s how to watch every game.

When will the games take place? Qatar is three hours ahead of London, eight hours ahead of New York and 11 hours ahead of Los Angeles. That means there will be pre-dawn kickoffs on the US East Coast for some games, and mid-afternoon starts for the 10 p.m. matches in Qatar.

You have more questions ? We have more answers here.

“Is it smart from a sustainability perspective to have eight stadiums that you can only use for three months a year?” He asked. “Of course not. So you need air conditioning to make them viable in the long run.

There are of course costs, both financial and environmental, and Ghanaian and Qatari officials will not disclose them. According to some estimates, the eight stadiums would cost a total of $6.5 billion, a price that does not include the human cost in lost lives and the chronic health problems of the low-paid migrant workers who built them.

Oil and natural gas have made Qatar rich over the past half-century, and the World Cup is part of a spending spree. Skyscrapers, shopping malls, luxury hotels and apartment buildings, a new airport and a subway system – all air-conditioned, of course – have sprung up, like Oz, improbably at this place.
