Dustin Poirier vs. Michael Chandler was an undeniable banger who more than deserved his spot as Fight of the Night at UFC 281. Both lightweights left it all in the cage, with Poirier walking away victorious after submitting Chandler two minutes into the third round. (see highlights here).
But ‘The Diamond’ was uncharacteristically upset after the win, and that’s because he feels like Michael Chandler fought badly during the fight. There were dodgy punches to the back of the head on the floor, unmistakable hooks, and at one point Chandler blew his bloody nose in Poirier’s face, covering him in blood. At the post-fight press conference, Dustin aired his grievances at “Iron Mike”.
“I told him it was my house, that’s what I told him,” Poirier said. ” said ‘This is my house.’ That’s right. And I told him he was a dirty mother too. For putting his fingers in my mouth and blowing his nose. That’s fine. It’s over, I can’t stand it, is anything.
Poirier didn’t even wait for the win to take his complaints to Chandler. He also did it during combat.
“I was telling him he was dirty, yeah.”
For his part, Michael Chandler denied intentionally cheating and called the hooking an accident.
“Yeah, I admit, I admit yes, his mouth was open and my hand went inside and was on his mouthpiece,” Chandler said when speaking to reporters after UFC 281. He bit, I was trying to Pull. It wasn’t like I was trying to pull him out, and he was biting him and I couldn’t pull him out. It was more just the angle. I mean, you push you against the cage.
“And then the other thing, when Dan Miragliotta said I was hitting him in the back of the head, I’m going to have to go back and watch him to be honest with you. But I know I was grabbing his ear, or at least in my mind I was catching his ear. So we had this kind of conversation. Y’all know I’m not a cheater. I love this game. I don’t cheat.”
As for the blood?
“If I wanted to breathe, that blood had to come out,” Chandler said. “So it wasn’t a malicious or weird thing, but it was definitely like, ‘Sorry, you’re there, but I didn’t create gravity. “”
When reporters relayed his explanation to Poirier, “The Diamond” shook his head.
“It was definitely intentional,” Poirier insisted.
Suffice to say, we don’t think Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier will be trading Christmas cards this year.
