Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa was unhappy with the officials on Saturday night. He had not calmed down on Monday.
During a playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Bosa said something to an official that prompted him to chase after him and throw a flag. Late in the game, Bosa snapped his helmet twice after officials missed a possible false start and a hold on the same play, which ended in a Jaguars touchdown. Bosa was awarded another penalty for that, and the Jaguars earned a two-point conversion after the ball traveled half the distance to the goal line. It was a huge difference in the Jaguars’ stunning 31-30 victory.
The Chargers’ season is over and Bosa apparently doesn’t mind receiving a massive fine, as he let the officials off on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Bosa criticized those responsible and their accountability according to ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry. It’s the kind of statement you won’t see many players saying out loud, no matter if they think about it.
“I really, really want to say some things,” Bosa said, via Thiry. “I have to be more responsible for my actions, obviously, but it’s a heated game and I’m in pain there, I’m playing on half a leg, I’m getting dragged to the ground, whatever, it could do me wrong with our team, and yeah, maybe some of them weren’t as egregious as I thought, but I don’t know. I think there just needs to be more accountability.
“I mean, if I tell them anything, I get fined $40,000, but if they blow a call that ruins an entire team’s season, they get to — they’ll probably be back in the locker room after the match like, ‘Haha, got that hole**, oh yeah, got him 15 yards, what a loser.
“I guarantee it, that’s how they talk at the back. Whatever the power trip. I’m sick of these fucking people.”
Here is the video of this quote from Sports Central LA:
Bosa is likely to be fined for his actions on the pitch on Saturday night. No doubt these fines will seem small compared to what the NFL hands out for these comments.
Bosa said he needed to “be more responsible for my actions” and said the Chargers lost because “we screwed up in the second half.” So he didn’t blame everything on the officials. But he’s clearly fed up with them.
Arbitration has come under intense scrutiny throughout the wild card weekend, and before that too. It’s a problem the NFL will have to address in the offseason. But first they will probably send Bosa a letter with a heavy fine.
