The winner of the most controversial MMA interview of 2022 goes to Dillon Danis and Ariel Helwani, who met in December to discuss Danis’ return to combat sports on January 14, 2023. Oddly enough, Dillon won’t be competing in MMA where his impressive jiu jitsu pedigree would come into play. Instead, he will be boxing YouTuber KSI as part of MF&DAZN: X Series 004.
But don’t worry, MMA fans. We will have our chance to see Danis in a cage again if all goes well in two weeks. Between all the insults and mockery in The MMA Hour interview (watch it below), Danis shared his plans for an extremely busy 2023.
“I’ll try to do four, maybe more [fights]said Danis. “When I get back to MMA, I’m going to go through them fast, two quick submissions. I have two fights left with Bellator, so you never know what’s going to happen.
We certainly don’t know how his fight with KSI will pan out as Danis returns from a horrific knee injury that has kept him out of competition since mid-2019.
“I had knee surgery at the HSS [Hospital for Special Surgery], which is supposed to be the best,” he explained (via MMA Fighting). “It ended up failing. My transplant failed, completely failed. So I had to have another surgery, which is another year. So basically two surgeries in a year, they said it’s was like having two car accidents, so my knee was like screwed up.
“So I had the operation which failed, they had to use a different graft, they did a whole thing, in a year. So my knee was screwed. It’s not like I didn’t want to fight. It’s the dumbest thing ever. Why wouldn’t I want to fight?
Anyone who followed Danis on social media could see the guy was stuck in a full cast from ankle to crotch forever, and that’s a big question mark over the agility of the jiu jitsu champion’s feet. after that. He wasn’t exactly skilled with his hands to begin with, based on his two Bellator fights (which he still won by first-round submission, to be fair).
Not that KSI is entering his fourth pro boxing fight with Golden Gloves credentials or anything. But we’ve seen footage of him hitting the pads properly. This is the level of intruder that this fight of January 14 brings: who is the least terrible attacker?
People with more money than sense can pay in hopes of seeing KSI or Danis get knocked out, and that’s what we have on our vision board too. But celebrity boxing has also gone up in the past and gone down once people realized that unskilled attackers aren’t that much fun to watch and their fights usually end in mediocre decisions.
How do you see KSI vs. Dillon Danis, Maniacs? And if Danis wins, what do you want him to do next?
