The Ultimate Fighter is set to return this summer with Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler as head trainers. While most people are still impressed with the selection of coaches, BJJ ace Gordon Ryan wants to know if any of the teams need a jiu jitsu teacher.
Ryan is currently recognized as one of the best jiu jitsu practitioners in the world, and he gets paid like that too. “King” recently signed a seven-figure contract with FloSports, which is a good amount of money in any combat sport and almost unheard of in grappling. This contract starts on February 25 when he faces Felipe Pena.
Pena and Ryan have some serious heat coming into this match, but Gordon Ryan tends to generate heat without much effort. Now he offers to bring some of that with him to The Ultimate Fighter.
“I wonder if anyone needs a jiu jitsu coach,” he wrote on Instagram alongside a poster of TUF’s Team McGregor vs Team Chandler upcoming season.
Now the question is whether Gordon Ryan offers his services to Conor McGregor or Michael Chandler. We think Chandler is the more realistic option as Ryan has a long-standing feud with Conor’s former jiu jitsu trainer, Dillon Danis.
McGregor teamed up with Danis in 2016 after being submitted by Nate Diaz in their first fight. While Dillon has been in full brace and unable to train for the past few years, ‘The Notorious’ still considers him part of the team.
“I’m always rockin’ with Dillon. All the!” McGregor responded in December 2022 before adding “He should come back to do MMA,” rather than a boxing match with KSI. That fight would eventually fall apart a month later.
Meanwhile, Michael Chandler trains at Kill Cliff FC, formerly known as Sandford MMA. Most guys bring their own trainers with them when they do The Ultimate Fighter, and that’s what we expect from Chandler and McGregor. But that wouldn’t stop “Iron” Mike from potentially inviting Gordon as a special guest, especially if McGregor brings Danis with him. This would be an episode we wouldn’t want to miss!
Ultimate Fighter Season 31 is scheduled to air between May 30 and August 15. There is no announced date for when filming will begin, or when McGregor and Chandler will fight.
