Game Notes: The hoops version of the rivalry between That Team Up North and That Team Down South was not as lopsided as the football version, although, like their grid brethren, the Wolverines had the most recent victory of the series, eliminating the Buckeyes, 75-69, last March. A UM victory today would be the first streak for the Wolverines since winning in 2018 and 2019.
The Buckeyes and Wolverines have been two of the most disappointing teams in Big Ten play; both picked to finish in top half of league, UM barely holds No. 9 seed while OSU sits No. 12e. Despite that, they feature two of the best freshman contenders of the year in OSU forward Brice Sensabaugh and UM guard Jett Howard. Sensabaugh is averaging 17.4 points per game — good for fifth in the conference — as well as 5.4 rebounds and one steal while shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 47.5 percent from 3-point range. Howard is right behind, at 14.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while hitting 43.3 percent rushing and 39.9 percent on 3s.
The big question is Howard’s ankle; he injured his joint against Minnesota on Jan. 22 and missed a game (Purdue) before coming back with 21 points on Jan. 29 against Penn State. He wasn’t as effective Thursday in Michigan’s win over Northwestern, making two of eight shots en route to eight points.
After their game today, the Wolverines will begin preparing for a visit to Nebraska (seated in 13e in the conference, but certainly no surprise) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, while the Buckeyes return home to host Northwestern on Thursday.
