Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Jon Jones has proven himself to be one of the most effective strategists in MMA history. While Jones undoubtedly has immense physical gifts and a deep technical game, his ability to put it all together and adapt his skills to various opponents at the championship level is really what elevated “Bones” to greatness.
He’s an athlete who takes strategy and preparation seriously (most of the time). That’s clearly the case in her next main event against Ciryl Gane, which will take place this weekend (Saturday, March 4, 2023) in Las Vegas, Nevada. His heavyweight debut will have more eyes than ever, and Jones has made it clear that watching footage on Gane is a top priority.
According to the former Light Heavyweight champion, it was a very fruitful study. He was able to identify Gane’s habits from both positions, and he identified the main pair of weaknesses in the French fighter’s game.
“I respect Ciryl Gane, I really do, but I constantly study film and I just see a lot of role models,” Jones said during the UFC 285 pre-fight conference (via MMAJunkie). “When he’s in one position, there are things he really likes to do. He often frequents the same well. When he’s in the opposite position, he has his tendencies. Apart from that, I realized that he didn’t have a lot of wrestling. He relies on evasion, trying to get away. He relies on jiu-jitsu instead of strong takedown defense, and so does even for the ground game. I saw Francis Ngannou being able to rack up maybe five, six minutes of best time in this fight, and Francis is not a guy known for controlling people at the top.
“He has the showdown. I don’t think he’s a very strong kickboxer defensively. He has a very good attack. Like I said, his defense is mostly in his footwork, and two other big holes are jiu-jitsu and wrestling.
Jones would seem to place a lot of weight on Gane’s only career loss to Ngannou. ‘The Predator’ was able to control Gane for a significant portion of the fight, but he also had the advantage of being one of the strongest men to ever grace the UFC Octagon. Even so, he was unable to land anything terribly significant. Otherwise, Jones’ critique of Gane using distance as a defense stands out, simply because he’s been the MO “Bones” for years!
Either way, it looks like Jones intends to implement a wrestling-focused approach at UFC 285. Will it work in his favor?

Jones is a very strange guy. The same guy who pretended to party all the way through some fight camps is tearing up his opponent for playing video games in his spare time?
