Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Jon Jones absolutely ran through Ciryl Gane this past weekend (Saturday, March 4, 2023) in the main event of UFC 285. After a few short exchanges on the feet, ‘Bones’ timed a takedown attempt perfectly, a advanced the position with no problem and wrapped up a fight-ending guillotine choke as Gane attempted to use the fence to stand (STRONGS). Fans waited a decade for Jones’ heavyweight debut, but the whole thing only lasted minutes!
On the other side of the equation, a lot of criticism has been thrown at Gane. It was, to put it bluntly, a poor performance for “Bon Gamin”. As a result, the former interim champion has been accused of not taking the sport seriously, and his struggling defense has been widely mocked. Many fans online are calling on Gane to ditch his longtime coach Fernand Lopez following the loss.
Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen has a different perspective. According to him, Gane lost the mental battle and got scared of his opponent, which cost more than just a technical error.
“Ciryl Gane was scared to death,” Sonnen said on her YouTube channel (via MiddleEasy). “The way Ciryl Gane ran away from Jon, dropped my jaw and I’m not the biggest believer in Ciryl Gane, I don’t want to be a jerk to Gane, or ever kick a guy when he’s down, I’ve been in his exact spot.
He continued: “Ciryl wasn’t first choice for his match, Ngannou was, Ciryl wasn’t second choice, Stipe was, so we went with our third choice. Understanding that, I don’t I still didn’t know Ciryl was scared. Ciryl is allegedly, I’ve never seen him with my own eyes, but I’ve been told a professional kickboxer. I’ve never seen him do that with my own eyes,” a he said “So Ciryl is an attacker and we’re gonna start this fucking thing in your kingdom, you can’t be scared, you can’t be.”
Let’s hear from the readers: Was it a case of nerves or was Jones just the better man?
Bo Nickal continues to deny the nut kicking incident which definitely happened in full view of the world.
This is just the exact level of evil I expect from UFC matchmaking. Leave “El Cucuy” alone!
Kyoji Horiguchi has reportedly vacated his RIZIN bantamweight belt. What’s next for “The Typhoon?”
Jiri Prochazka vs. Jamahal Hill is going to be a BANGER!
Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but it seems to me that Stephen Thompson still has no interest in fighting Shavkat Rakhmonov.
All due respect to you and your excellent performance, but 0/4 on takedowns doesn’t make you a “not” a grappler! Congratulations on your victory! Let’s not forget that you won by submission! But lots of love! https://t.co/Gr3zX0oCbu

Speaking of Rakhmonov, here’s a reminder that only one of those knees started the finishing streak against Alex Oliveira. Geoff Neal is incredibly tough!

Similar to Jon Jones, Alexa Grasso and her team rehearsed the finish at length.

It’s totally okay to keep your hands low when you’re out of punching range…unless you’re exactly underestimating the punching distance!
Double rollover of an anaconda choke – it’s new!
It’s a weird crank that’s not allowed to work. Neat!
Mess with the sheep, you get the…wool?
