Duncanville defensive end Colin Simmons has had a brisk start to the season, making plays in the offensive backfield and helping his team start 5-0. The five-star defender reckons he’s made double-digit sacks this year, but he feels capable of so much more.
“Honestly right now I’m just warming up. I haven’t even gotten hot yet,” Simmons said. really me. So far I’m doing well, averaging a few sacks per game. I play the race, I rush the passer. But I feel like I can do so much more than that. »
Ranked No. 4 in the nation in the Class of 2024, Simmons is already a hot commodity with a terrific skill set. He’s showing his versatility this year but says there are still areas where he can improve.
“I feel like I’m showing it all, especially playing the racing game. I was really good at stopping the race. I’m more explosive with the ball this year, with a quick first step. I just feel like I’m faster,” Simmons said. “I can improve with my hands. I have good hands, but I feel like it can be 10 times better.
On the recruiting front, Simmons has over 40 scholarship offers. The Texas Longhorns are one of the teams in pursuit, and Texas staff were in touch Saturday night after UT beat Oklahoma 49-0.
“The way Texas did OU, it was crazy,” Simmons said. “They contacted me (Saturday night), just asking if I had seen the game, sending me articles, things like that.”
Texas has always been a team that has been in the heart of the race for Simmons, but he said after watching the Longhorns’ performance on Saturday, Texas is in an even stronger position.
“It made me feel like Texas is back to the best program it was every time I see stuff like that. It made me watch them even more,” Simmons said.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Simmons hopes to travel to Austin for a game in Texas sometime this fall, but hasn’t locked anything yet. He hit an LSU game earlier this year and the Tigers will be strong contenders for his signature.
“What’s not to like about LSU? It’s like Texas, just smaller. The diversity is great there,” Simmons said. , they feel so welcoming. I love LSU.
Simmons said he was planning a trip to Florida this weekend to watch the Gators host LSU.
