Petr had everything he could bear, he couldn’t bear it anymore!
Former UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan lost a razor-sharp split decision to 135-pound rival Sean O’Malley on the main card of UFC 280 pay-per-view (PPV) at the weekend. last end in Abu Dhabi, the second consecutive time “No Mercy” was ruled out by the judges’ decision.
Yan also dropped a tight split against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 273.
The Russian bruiser is apparently so upset with the controversial scorecards of his last two fights that he’s actually threatening to quit the promotion once his contract ends, according to former analyst turned UFC champion Daniel Cormier.
“Ryan, a little baseball inside,” Cormier told his ESPN co-host Ryan Clark. “Petr Yan is so disappointed with this decision, Petr Yan is so disappointed with the decision against Aljo, that I hear that this guy might want to consider something different career wise because he just doesn’t feel like…maybe the organization doesn’t have the back. It’s crazy.”
All 26 media outlets listed on MMAdecisions.com scored the UFC 280 bout in favor of “No Mercy,” a far cry from the controversial scoreboard (see here) that gave O’Malley the split decision. The scores against Sterling, however, weren’t nearly as close.
You know what they say about hands and judges.
“It was one of those close fights,” UFC President Dana White told the media at the UFC 280 post-fight press conference (watch it here). “I can see people saying Yan won the fight, I can see people saying O’Malley won the fight. The weird thing is that it wasn’t how I thought it would be with the judges scorecards. I thought it depended on who you gave the first round to determine who won the fight, but apparently that wasn’t the case.
O’Malley replaced Yan at the top of the bantamweight division in the latest UFC rankings update.
