According to the police report, the two front passengers, LeCroy and McClendon, were wearing lap and shoulder seat belts. The two rear passengers, Willock and Bowles, were not wearing seat belts. All airbags deployed.
The police report said the owner was Ean Holding of Belleville, Illinois. It is an associated company of Enterprise Car Rental. In the insurance section of the accident report, he is listed as self-insured.
The inquest determined that “excessive speed” and initial contact with the curb and a tree in the path of the spinning vehicle were “most harmful” in causing the fatal injuries. The posted speed limit in the area is 40mph, but police did not say how fast the SUV was traveling when it crashed at 2.45am on Sunday.
Emergency responders were dispatched at 2:48 a.m. and arrived at 2:55 a.m. An Athens-Clarke County police spokesperson said there was no obvious indication that alcohol was involved in the accident.
Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said routine toxicology tests were performed on the driver. That’s protocol when a driver is killed in an accident, Wilson said. These toxicology results are expected to take several weeks to complete.
No autopsies were performed on the two people killed in the crash, Wilson said.
The Expedition also struck a 2017 Ford Transit van in the apartment complex parking lot where it came to rest.
The crash is still under investigation, police said.
The funeral of LeCroy, 24, will be held Wednesday in Toccoa. A memorial service for Willock is planned but no details have been released. A team bus will transport the Georgia players to the funeral.
