Sergei Pavlovich sits atop the list of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight contenders in 2023.
ESPN’s Brett Okamoto revealed today (Monday, February 27, 2023) that the Russian knockout artist will be in Las Vegas, Nevada for this weekend’s (Saturday, March 4, 2023) massive bout for the vacant UFC Heavyweight title between the legend of back, Jon Jones, and Ciryl Gane. In the event of an emergency and one of the fighters cannot compete before fight night, Pavlovich will act as a backup.
“Sergei Pavlovich is the heavyweight replacement for this week’s main event of UFC 285, according to his manager Ali Abdelaziz (@AliAbdelaziz00),” Okamoto tweeted. “Dana White mentioned last weekend that there was a backup in place. Pavlovich will weigh in Friday in Vegas, according to Abdelaziz.
Since losing his UFC debut in November 2018, Pavlovich (17-1) has been on an absolute tear, knocking out five straight opponents to solidify himself as the current No. promotion. While Pavlovich is potentially expected to fight this weekend should his services be required, he is also booked for a main event clash at UFC Vegas 71 on April 22, 2023 against Curtis Blaydes.
Despite all the signs that former champion Stipe Miocic may be waiting for Jones’ winner against Gane, Pavlovich is undeniably in a very good position whether he replaces on Saturday or not.
Who is Pavlovich most likely to beat?
