South Korea’s first lunar probe has returned some images of Earth and the Moon.

The Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter began orbiting the moon in December after the Korea Aerospace Research Institute had space He climbed aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in August.

The probe, also called “Danuri” due to public struggles in the country, which combines Korean words for the moon and enjoy, orbits the moon for 11 months.

Stunning images captured by the telescope showcasing the Earth and moon in black and white looks like something photographer Ansel Adams might have captured if he had gotten such an opportunity. The orbiter flies at an altitude of 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the lunar surface.

Data collected from the orbiter will be used to inform future lunar exploration, including the Artemis program, which will eventually aim to land humans at the lunar south pole by the end of 2024.

The ideal imagery could help with landing sites for future Artemis missions and planning resources such as choosing water.

South Korea signed the Artemis Agreement in 2021 and cooperates with NASA in lunar exploration.

The probe carries six instruments, including the NASA-funded ShadowCam, developed by Arizona State University.

Universities and research institutes in South Korea are exploring a high-resolution camera to explore future locations, a polarized camera to analyze surface particles, an instrument to measure the magnetic field and a lunar spectrometer to identify elements on the moon’s surface.

ShadowCam’s main objective is to take pictures of permanently outlined regions near the lunar poles that will help researchers looking for ice, mapping locations and watching for seasonal changes.

The spacecraft took a single photo of the moon's orbit around Earth on September 15, 2022.

The ShadowCam is several hundred times more sensitive than the cameras on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, so it can capture detailed images in incredibly low conditions.

The probe recently used ShadowCam to map the interior of Shackleton Crater, one of the permanently outlined regions on the moon’s surface.

The first ShadowCam image shows the permanent outline of the wall and floor of Shackleton Crater in detail like never before.

Previous images of this crater taken by the Lunar Orbiter Reconnaissance Orbiter could only spot its illuminated crater, but ShadowCam was able to see the interior, including the crater floor and rock tracks left by rocks that had slid inside.

The magistrate at He sees the Korea Aerospace Research Institute or KARI Danuri orbiter as “the first step towards the ability to explore the exploration of self-space search” according to the order.

The US, Russia, Japan, China, the European Union and India have all sent missions to the moon, and South Korea wants to focus on space exploration and expand its missions.

The surface of the moon can be seen to be heavily cratered as the Earth rises above it.

“Korea has successfully driven the Earth on the surface of the Moon or asteroids and made a safe return,” according to the institute. “Korea is waiting to achieve strategic space technology.”

In addition to orbit, KARI aims to make an initial lunar approach by 2030.
