Before 50,000 runners were released in the streets of New York, they gathered in Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and faced a expectation of several hours. In the early morning, the marathon runners linger, fight against the nervousness of forever and admire what others wear.
Call that Fort Wadsworth fashion walking.
It’s a layering exercise made more complicated by the lack of bag control. Any clothing that runners bring and choose not to run must be discarded before or during the race.
As the start time approaches, these layers fly in donation bins. Flanelles, Halloween costumes, space blankets and winter jackets are thrown into bursts of donations. Several thousand pounds of clothing are given to Goodwill Industries in the Greater New York and Northern New Jersey. Six UPS trucks were on site this year to transport the clothes given.
This year, unusually high temperatures meant there were fewer overlapping runners. But many still showed original styles. Superman capes, Wonder Woman outfits and tutus abounded.
Here is what some runners wore and thought before taking the start of the New York marathon:
Age: 72 years old
Hometown: Victoria, British Columbia
Can you tell us how you chose your outfit today?
I always try to find something unique to wear. It will be given and someone will get it. It’s close to Christmas, so I thought it would be fun.
Where did you collect this song?
Our local salvation army store.
How many marathons have you run? Today will be my 19th.
Have people commented on the outfit today? I received a lot of comments. Just so that you know, I will be 73 years next week.
How would you describe the aesthetics of your costume?
My sister is with me and she said, “I think ‘The Grinch’ was filmed in New York..” So she said it was really fitting that New York City chose something like “The Grinch.” Did you read the back?
What does the reverse say?
I don’t really remember it.
He says: “I will be good next year.” Are you sad to part with it?
Race to the finish line
The New York Marathon will take place on November 6. The 26.2 -thousand race in five boroughs begins at Staten Island and ends at Central Park.
Not at all. I am delighted that someone else has it.
Age: 48 years old
What inspired your look today?
The colors, first, so that someone recognizes me since I am here alone. My brother lives in Long Island. He will try to find me. So I thought it was brilliant, the better.
I am also part of Black Girls Run.
Tell me about Black Girls Run.
Black Girls Run is an organization of women who help people, women, to get up from the sofa up to 5 km, and that encourages them to make more than 5 km, like a 10 km, a 15 km and a semi- marathon.
How do you feel about temperature today?
I’m from Memphis, Tennessee. I run after the States. Black Girls Run inspired me to do the 50 states. So I have one more state, and I’m going to Hawaii next Saturday.
Wait, so you did 49 states? Have you done shopping in 49 states?
A half marathon in every state.
What is the last state?
Hawaii. Saturday. I will work the rest of the week by distance. Saturday I will be in Kauai. And then I will be on vacation in Honolulu.

I’m going there as Lady Liberty, in all her glory.

What is the accessory?
The torch. Critical piece of costume.
You’re the one who made that ?
I did it.
Do you commit to carrying it all over the 26.2 miles?
For all 26.2 miles.

It does not matter.

Well, I’m a chef. I like food. It’s to celebrate health and nutrition.

It’s a piece of bread ?
And what is in the bottle?
Are you going to run the full 26.2 in the outfit?
Yes of course. Yes.
Will the hat stay?
He will stay on.
What if he falls?
It won’t be because it has an adjustable elastic band. If it falls, I’ll come back, pick it up and put it back.
You are attached to the look.
I don’t run out of time. I’m just going for fun. Enjoy people, enjoy fans and don’t hurt yourself.

Are you going to run the full marathon with the pineapple?
Ask the pineapple if it is ready.
The world is in a bad crisis and we have the secret of how to balance the world.
Is the theme of your outfit balanced?
Have you thought about another object?
Yeah, you can give me a bottle of wine in the middle if you want.
In the middle of the race?
Yeah. No problem.
So, during the race, you could trade the pineapple?
People love pineapple.

We’ll see. We’re going to try, but I’m not sure we’ll keep until the end.
Can you throw it back as you go?
Yeah, probably yes.
What is the inspiration for the outfit?
We are from the same company, and we wanted to do something special in order to symbolize the fact that we are here.

It is a combination of painting. We paint blue and red paintings.
How would you describe your outfit?

Are you going to wear the flag running?
Most likely. We will remove the plastic and we will just take the flag with us.

What’s your name?
The Amazing Spider-Man.
What inspired the look?
I just wanted to go out and make someone’s day a little better. The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is just trying to get people to get up and run.
Did people come to ask you for help?
Not yet. Blue boys seem to be very good today.
But are you on the lookout?
I am on duty all the time.
Are you going to run all the 26.2 miles in there?
As long as no one shouts me.
