WATCH: Wolves go 4-5 after DLo fails to enter game originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Minnesota Timberwolves point guard D’Angelo Russell will make an appearance on the next edition of Shaqtin a fool.
Russell was called up for the game during the second quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns. After Wolves guard Jaylen Nowell was fouled on a converted lay-up, Taurean Prince left the floor in favor of Russell.
But the problem was that Russell didn’t enter the game before Nowell’s only free throw attempt. Heck, he didn’t even enter the game 15 seconds after Nowell made the free throw.
As the Suns took the ball downfield, Russell stood at the scorer’s table waiting to enter the game with just four Wolves players defending. The absence of a fifth defender made it easy for the Suns to get Damion Lee a wide-open corner 3.
Lee missed the shot and the rebound was caught by Suns forward Torrey Craig with Russell still (!) on the sidelines. Craig made a pass before quickly recovering the ball and firing a 3-point shot. As Craig took charge of the shot, Russell finally realized his team was at a disadvantage, ran across the floor and watched the ball go through the net.
It didn’t even look like the Wolves bench realized Russell was supposed to be in the game and the team was playing 4v5 either.
So what happened there?
“I have no idea,” said head coach Chris Finch. told reporters after the game. “I have no idea.”
“It’s just a sign of a team that lacks a bit of confidence and determination at the moment,” he added.
If Wolves had played basketball, it might have been considered a fun blunder. Wolves, however, don’t play great basketball.
After giving the Memphis Grizzlies a real battle in the first round of last season’s playoffs and making a huge offseason trade for Rudy Gobert, Minnesota has stumbled out the door. They are now 5-7 after Wednesday’s 129-117 loss to Phoenix.
Wolves don’t even play well when their best players are on the ground. In the 175 minutes Russell, Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards shared the floor, Minnesota has a minus-4.9 net rating.
Russell particularly struggled, shooting 38.3% from the field and 31.5% from deep.
