During Tuesday Live PFTChris Simms and I were spitting on potential destinations for quarterback Tom Brady, if (as it seems) he intends to keep playing.
His testicle, which many consider artificial, rather than just being asked about his own pre-recorded podcast for a ‘timeline’ about his decision appears to be (in my opinion) an attempt to cover up any tampering that will happen before he won’t officially become a free agent in March – if no tampering is already happening.
So, while suggesting places where Brady might think he would have a shot at an eighth championship, Simms mentioned one that I hadn’t considered before.
The Detroit Lions.
Wouldn’t that be something? Tom Brady, back in Michigan. Tom Brady, with a Lions team that ended 2022 strong. A Lions team with an impressive core of talented players. A Lions team that quarterback Jared Goff might be able to lead on a deep playoff run, but might not be able to get the upper hand.
Brady showed he could do it. Seven times. And while he’s 46, if the Lions finally want to make a Super Bowl appearance and maybe even win it, Brady could give them a better shot at it than Goff.
I know I know. Goff doesn’t deserve to suddenly find himself swirling around in a storm of speculation. But the reality is, when he arrived in Detroit two years ago, no one thought he would be anything more than a short-term fix. He’s played well enough to be traded to a team that needs a starter, and there might be a team or two looking for one after the impending game of signal-caller musical chairs ends.
Beyond football, there’s a very real business element to wanting Brady. He was selling every ticket for every game at Ford Field. The Lions would also end up with several prime-time games, as well as several contests at 4:25 p.m. ET. In recent years, these games attract even more viewers than games played at night.
This may be the way to finally break the curse of Bobby Layne, who was only 31 when the Lions traded him but looked 46. Perhaps it would be appropriate to bring in a quarterback who will be 46 but looks closer to 31.
At this point, it’s nothing more than a dart thrown freely in the direction of the board. But if the Lions get a phone call from someone on Brady’s behalf in the coming weeks (or if they already have), it won’t be easy to say no. And at the end of the day, it could make a lot of sense to say, “Damn yes.”
