Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a dangerous sport, and when there are incompetent referees, that makes it even more dangerous. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened this weekend (Friday, January 13, 2023) at Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) 150
The regional event was held inside the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, Minnesota. On the main card, a welterweight bout between Jalin Fuller (7-2) and Scott Writz (6-3) unfolded, ending in a scary – but totally avoidable – sight.
In the first 30 seconds of the fight, Fuller locked in a ninja choke when Writz fired for a takedown. It looks like Writz passed out at 4:30 a.m. into the fight (emphasized by Twitter user Caposa). However, the fight didn’t end until the clock hit 3:45, during which Fuller moved to a high elbow guillotine.
Referee Travis Metteer didn’t once check Writz’s limp body for more than a minute. It was a horrible and frightening scene. Indeed, Metteer needs to return to the amateur MMA scene as he is obviously incompetent at his job.
As you might guess, Twitter went crazy when the clip surfaced:
does not suit me. it doesn’t hurt to at least check his arm to see if he’s still with it. hope the dude is doing well https://t.co/ogURd922pm

Writz, despite the referee’s incompetence, appears to have suffered no serious consequences from the prolonged choke.
