WBC recently created a special championship belt for the winner of the boxing match Jake Paul against Tommy Fury, which will air on ESPN+ and FITE+ pay-per-view (PPV) this Sunday (February 26, 2023) from Diriyah Arena in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. The winner will be recognized as “Champion Diriyah” which boxing fans – following the old rule of playground homophones – have now labeled “Diarrhea Champion.”
I guess it’s a step up from the MVP belt.
“The World Boxing Council created the Diriyah Strap to recognize the importance of ‘The Truth’ to the boxing scene as this event continues to support the growth of our sport by bringing in new audiences,” WBC wrote on the social networks. “Jake has dedication and respect for the sport and Tommy Fury of the Fury boxing dynasty presents a clear challenge to Paul in a battle of two undefeated professional boxers.”
Unsurprisingly, bitter boxing fans are torching WBC on social media.
“A slap in the face to any true pro fighter who broke their ass just to pay bills in general while working a full time job,” a fan wrote on the WBC Instagram page. “I can go to any local gym and find guys all day that would be competitive with those two.”
“All boxers have a lot more dedication and respect for the sport than Jake Paul,” added another. “Most do it their whole lives fighting for nothing in small venues while working 9-5 jobs selling their own tickets and trying to make a name for themselves fighting in the ring so should they all get a belt?”
Paul vs Fury main card kicks off at 2 p.m. ET (11:00 a.m. PT) and costs $49.99 to stream (watch it here).
